Amoxicillin — available under brand names including Amoxil and Trimox — is one of the most widely prescribed antibiotics in the world. It is a penicillin-type antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections of the ear, throat, urinary tract, skin, and lungs. Amoxicillin is typically prescribed as a course of 5–10 days, taken two or three times daily.
How Long Does Amoxicillin Stay in Your System?
Amoxicillin has a plasma half-life of approximately 1–1.5 hours. After a single dose, it is largely cleared from your bloodstream within 7–8 hours (5 half-lives). Can I Drink Alcohol While Taking Amoxicillin?
Unlike some antibiotics — particularly metronidazole (Flagyl) — amoxicillin does not cause a dangerous reaction with alcohol. However, alcohol can impair immune function, disrupt sleep, and slow recovery from infection. It can also worsen gastrointestinal side effects such as nausea, which are already common with amoxicillin.
Since amoxicillin clears the plasma within 7–8 hours of a single dose, any alcohol consumed between doses will not directly interact with the antibiotic. That said, supporting your body's recovery by minimising alcohol throughout a course of antibiotics is generally advisable.
